How genital wart (condyloma) removal works
The procedure is always preceded by a thorough consultation, at which the doctor examines the condylomas, assesses their extent, suggests a suitable treatment and explains how it works.
During the procedure the doctor applies a local anaesthetic as a cream or an injection. It takes effect within 15 to 20 minutes, and only then does the procedure itself begin. The laser beam precisely vaporises the condyloma tissue layer by layer. There is minimal bleeding, because the beam seals small vessels at the same time. Depending on the number and size of the condylomas, the procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Immediately after the treatment the doctor disinfects the area, and the patient leaves with instructions for home care. The whole procedure is usually completed within an hour.
You will find a detailed comparison of the laser method and the surgical approach in the article laser vs surgical wart removal.
Recovery after the procedure
Immediately after the procedure the treated area may be slightly red and sensitive; these symptoms usually subside within 48 hours. If you follow the doctor’s instructions, the mucosa heals completely in 2 to 3 weeks.
During healing, avoid sexual intercourse for at least 2 weeks; strenuous physical activity and saunas are not recommended for one week. Keep the area clean and dry; the doctor will recommend a suitable disinfectant for home care.
The follow-up visit is scheduled about 3 weeks after the procedure. We assess the healing and check whether the condylomas have been completely removed. If you notice significant redness, swelling or a raised temperature around the treated area, contact the clinic without waiting for the scheduled check-up.
In rare cases condylomas can come back after a laser procedure if the HPV virus persists in the body. That is why it is advisable to strengthen your immunity after the procedure and to recommend a gynaecological or urological examination to your partner
HPV diagnostics
For some patients the doctor may recommend additional examinations, including gynaecological, urological or proctological ones, depending on where the condylomas are located.
For women, regular gynaecological check-ups and cervical screening are important.
FAQ - genital wart removal in Prague
Condylomas raise many questions that patients most often ask before the procedure. Here are straightforward answers.
Does my partner need treatment if I have been diagnosed with condylomas?
Yes, an examination of your partner is strongly recommended. HPV is sexually transmitted, and your partner may be a carrier of the virus without symptoms. Your partner should consider an examination, especially if they have any signs of HPV infection.
Does health insurance cover laser removal of condylomas?
Laser removal of condylomas is not usually covered by health insurers; the patient pays for the procedure.
In some cases surgical removal or cryotherapy may be covered if specific conditions are met; this depends on the insurer and the doctor’s indication. Our clinic does not work with health insurers in this respect.
How long after HPV infection do genital warts first appear?
The incubation period ranges from 3 weeks to several months, and occasionally longer.
HPV can persist in the body without visible symptoms, and signs of infection can be influenced by the state of the immune system or other triggers. This is also why it is not always easy to tell when and from whom the infection came.
Can condylomas be transmitted other than through sexual intercourse?
Sexual transmission is by far the most common route. In rare cases transmission can occur through direct contact with infected tissue, for example from mother to child during birth.
Transmission via objects or the environment is extremely unlikely for genital HPV strains.
Does HPV vaccination help people who have already had condylomas?
Vaccination after a condyloma infection has limited benefit for the HPV strains already present.
However, it may protect against other strains of the virus that the person has not yet had. Whether vaccination is suitable is best discussed individually with a doctor.
The information on this page is general in nature and does not substitute for an in-person consultation with a doctor. The suitability of the procedure, its extent and any risks are assessed by the doctor individually at the first examination. Contraindications and results vary from case to case. If you have any health concerns, please seek advice from your own doctor.
