How hand wart removal works
The procedure is preceded by a short consultation, at which the doctor examines the wart with a dermatoscope, confirms the diagnosis and suggests the optimal approach. For growths around the nail or on the thumb, the doctor assesses whether the wart reaches under the nail bed, because the depth of the growth determines the laser settings.
During the procedure the doctor applies a local anaesthetic. On the fingers an injection around the growth is most often used, which takes effect within 5 to 10 minutes. Once the anaesthetic works, the treatment itself begins. The laser beam gradually vaporises the wart tissue and seals the surrounding vessels at the same time, so bleeding is minimal.
For a small wart on a finger the procedure takes only a few minutes; wart removal under the nail or treating several growths at once takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
After the procedure the doctor disinfects the area and covers it with a sterile plaster or dressing. The patient leaves with detailed instructions on wound care, what to avoid and when to come for a check-up.
Recovery after the procedure
The hand heals quickly. Immediately after the procedure the area is red and slightly swollen; these symptoms usually subside within 48 hours. A scab forms in the first days and falls off after 4 to 14 days, depending on the size and depth of the treated wart.
Do not pick off the scab; the skin renews itself naturally underneath. Keep the area dry and clean, apply the regenerating cream recommended by the doctor and protect the wound from friction.
Limit heavy manual work, sport and contact with water for about a week. Avoid direct sun on the treated area for at least four weeks; apply SPF 50 to prevent a pigment spot.
About three weeks after the procedure there is a check-up, at which the doctor reviews the healing. The doctor checks whether the wart has been completely removed, assesses the skin and recommends any additional care. If the wart comes back after healing, we deal with it straight away.
FAQ - hand wart removal in Prague
Naturally, you will have many questions before the procedure. Here are answers to the most common ones.
Are hand warts contagious and how are they spread?
Yes, hand warts are contagious. HPV is spread by direct contact with infected skin, typically through handshakes, touch or sharing objects such as towels, nail files or keyboards.
It enters the skin through small scratches or hangnails. Washing your hands straight after touching a wart and not squeezing the growth reduce the risk of transmission.
How can I tell a finger wart from another skin growth?
A finger wart has a characteristic rough, cauliflower-like surface and a greyish-brown colour.
If the top layer is pared away, tiny black dots become visible – these are blocked blood capillaries.
Fibromas and keratoses have a different surface and location. If you are not sure, a dermatoscopic examination distinguishes the types of growth quickly and with high accuracy.
Can a hand wart go away on its own without treatment?
In a healthy adult with good immunity this is possible, but it takes months to years and the outcome is uncertain.
In the meantime the wart can spread to neighbouring fingers. Growths around the nails or under the nail bed are less likely to go away on their own, and waiting prolongs the time during which the wart can spread the virus.
Why does a hand wart come back even after successful removal?
Recurrence happens when HPV survives in the surrounding tissue outside the treated zone or when you are reinfected from the outside.
The hands are the most exposed part of the body and come into contact with viruses most often. Strengthening your immunity after the procedure and good hygiene significantly reduce the risk of recurrence.
If the wart keeps coming back, the doctor treats it again and considers whether a different approach is needed. The doctor will explain at the consultation how to get rid of warts and reduce the risk of recurrence.
Do other household members need treatment if I have a wart on my hand?
It is not required, but it is recommended. Other household members may have come into contact with the virus through shared objects or surfaces.
If they have no visible growths, thorough hygiene and not sharing personal items are enough.
If they notice warts, it is best to have them examined before the growth gets bigger.
